Scabs after hair transplant

Find out all about scabs after a hair transplant: how they occur, how long they last and important tips for a hassle-free recovery.

What about scabs after a hair transplant?

After a hair transplant, a surgical procedure in which hair follicles are moved, it is quite normal to get scabs. Don’t worry, this is part of the process. But how do you deal with them? Should you leave them in or remove them? And what does this mean for the new hair follicles?

Why do I have scabs after a hair transplant?

During hair transplantation, the skin is punctured and swelling may occur. As wound fluid dries, scabs form. This is a natural process and not something to worry about. What is important is how you deal with these scabs.

How do you treat the scabs?

The newly placed hair follicles need to settle down. The roots of the follicle must grow out so that they can produce hair. Make sure the treated area is rested. Avoid exertion and sleep with a neck pillow, for example.

Can I remove the scabs after a hair transplant?

No, don’t scratch! Scabs are attached to the scalp, and scratching can cause the wound to open and bleed. This increases the risk of infection and can cause a hair follicle to fail to take root.

What can you do?

After about a week, you can try to soften the scabs by showering. Use lukewarm water and conditioner, but do not rub. Massage gently so the wounds don’t open.

How long do you keep the scabs after a hair transplant?

This varies from person to person. Usually it takes 10 to 15 days after the hair transplant before the scabs come off on their own. If they have not disappeared after two weeks, contact us. In the meantime, keep your scalp clean and avoid contact, do not wear headgear and avoid sweaty activities. A healthy lifestyle and drinking plenty of water also helps.

What to do about itching after a hair transplant

.
Scabs may itch, but scratching is not an option. Use an ice pack or frozen peas in a tea towel next to the treated area to reduce itching. Avoid direct contact with the treated area. You can also prevent itching by keeping your scalp clean and fresh.
